Understanding Graphic Design

The definition of graphic design is a creative activity to create functional and aesthetic works for various types of media whose communication process does not only rely on text, it tends to use more visual elements. Graphic design is a process (verb) as well as the result of the process itself (noun .).

Graphic design produces visual products such as:

  1. Brochure
  2. Magazine layout
  3. Book cover
  4. Logo
  5. Website interface
  6. Mobile phone application interface, etc

Graphic design starts from various non-printed static products such as posters, brochures, magazines, etc. However, along with the times, non-print media has also become the media he is involved in. Along with the times, the notion of graphic design is also expanding and is often replaced by other more general terms such as: Graphic Communication and Visual Communication Design.

Definition of Design

According to JB Reswick, design is a creative activity that involves creating something new and useful that did not exist before. Furthermore, Yasraf explained, thus design is a creative-progressive activity with products, the end product of which is novelty and difference. (Piliang, 2008: 384).

Summing up what the two experts stated above, it seems clear that Design is a creative process that produces useful products that did not even exist before. It seems that design is the activity of designing and always refers to it. Even the word design is equivalent to the word design in the Big Indonesian Dictionary.

This statement is also in line with the origin of the word “Design” which was borrowed from English, namely: Design. In the Oxford Dictionary, “Design” means a plan or drawing made to show the appearance and function or workings of a building, clothing, or other object before it is made.

Understanding Graphics

Graphic itself comes from the word Graphic in English, which means something related to fine arts, including pictures, illustrations, sculptures to calligraphy. The word Graphic comes from the Greek, namely: graphikos which means drawing or writing.

Why is the term graphic used and not visual? Because appearance itself is not a noun, while the notion of design is closely related to the object it produces. The terms used must be able to accommodate the process as well as the objects it produces. The term graphics can accommodate both needs.
